Innovations in oral health and primary care integration to improve the oral health of the community
Even though dentistry and medicine have made a lot of rules about referrals and working together, most of them are for activities within each profession rather than for dentist-to-dentist coordination and networking. Integration of oral health into primary care is complex because of a lack of clinical knowledge, time, money, and staff support, among other things. In its report, the commission suggests several ways to improve patient integration.
Integration of primary care is a new way to improve access to dental care. This model focuses on making it easier for patients to get preventive care and find problems with their oral health early on. It also wants to improve primary care providers' oral health knowledge and skills. The Center for Oral Health and General Health works to include oral health in primary care. The Center for Health Workforce Studies at SUNY Albany consists of the Institute.
In July 2016, the Center for Oral Health and Primary Care Integration opened. It is one of six national centers that help improve training for primary care. Its goal is to be a national resource for oral health integration at the systems level. This initiative will focus on developing new ways to help patients and simultaneously lower healthcare costs.
The center is the result of the work of several groups working together. Partners in this effort are the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and the Center for Oral Health and Primary Care Integration. Dr. Donoff's team has made several tools to help the United States integrate health care better.
Several research projects have been done to help make a curriculum for integrating oral health. The team looked at different oral health programs and talked to people who worked on 14 national surveys. The team also looked into the skills needed to teach about oral health. They also learned about many programs that teach oral health to people from different professions. These programs also deal with significant oral health issues that affect a large number of people. In the first 18 months of foundation courses, for example, they teach people how to care for their teeth.
For oral health and primary care services to work well together, they must work together as a team. For example, the Center for Rural and Remote Oral Health combines dental care with other types of health care, such as medical and mental health care. In addition, the primary care team can provide complete care by putting a primary care provider in an oral health clinic.
Standards have been made by the commission on dental accreditation to make sure that dental students take part in IPE. There is a requirement in these standards that dental students learn about social determinants of health and the things that lead to health disparities in vulnerable populations. Also, the ADEA's annual senior survey shows that 84 percent of graduate dental students feel ready for IPE and can combine oral health care with medical care. Many of these interactions happen in shared classes, simulated patients, and other activities outside of school.
